700 m of climbing from the bobsleigh track to the summit
Trebević is the mountain people in Sarajevo head for on a free day, and this hike takes you to the top of it.
We meet in town and drive up to the start: the bobsleigh track built for the 1984 Winter Olympics, long abandoned now. After half a kilometre on the flat, the trail climbs for about five kilometres — around 700 metres of ascent in all, which is why we call it moderate — to the highest point of the mountain.
That is where we stop for a picnic lunch, with the whole of Sarajevo spread out below. The good news after lunch is that the climbing is over: we walk back down the mountain through the forest.
