1,496 m Lukomir, the highest village in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Lukomir sits at 1,496 metres, which makes it the highest village in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is also the most isolated. It is a traditional Bosnian village, and the best way to arrive is on foot.
We drive an hour and a half from Sarajevo to the village of Umoljani and walk the eight kilometres to Lukomir from there. In the village you will see stećci — the monumental medieval tombstones that lie scattered across Bosnia and Herzegovina, an estimated 60,000 of them in all.
Lunch is a picnic with a 360-degree panorama of the mountains, and then it is eight kilometres back to Umoljani. Sixteen kilometres makes this the longest of our hikes, which is why we call it challenging: it is a full day on your feet.
